Episode 093: Good Queen Alysanne

The boys forge ahead through Fire and Blood in Episode 093:  Good Queen Alysanne.  In this episode Jaehaerys and Alysanne face tragedy as the Shivers bear down on Westeros.  They also make a progress up north where the winter’s cold and Alaric’s hospitality is the same.  Also, Alysanne flexes on her husband to end a sacred right to the Lords of Westeros, while Jaehaerys uses some windfalls of capital to improve infrastructure for his Kingdom.

In this episode we wanted to mention that we had a few audio issues in our recording.  In truth Matt was a hero in salvaging some spots.  We regret this departure from our normal level of quality and thank the Khalasar for their understanding.

This is our second to last episode of Fire and Blood as our bizarre journey through that tome winds to an end. After we polish that off, we will be jumping straight into some more ASOIAF, hand-picking sections from The World of Ice and Fire.  As is our custom, we aren’t going to make it easy, actually starting with the section called  “The Bones and Beyond”, which covers lands to the East, like Asshai. We will be hand selecting other selections as we go.

Episode 092: Gods That Give, Gods That Take

The Stranger has come in the year of 54 AC and the Fingers explore one of the biggest mysteries of Fire and Blood in Episode 092:  the death of Aerea.  We also lose another Queen, a High Septon, nearly a whole Queen’s court including her consort, oh and a Westhill...a what?  Also, laws are written, progresses taken, High Septons appointed, and peace largely maintained during the years of Jaehaerys' early rule.

Episode 091: Doctrine of Exceptionalism

In Doctrine of Exceptionalism, Matt and Scad finally see Jaehaerys mount the throne (among other things) as he reaches the age of majority, and changes, they are a’comin.  Also in this episode, Rogar commits treason (or does he), Rhaena causes trouble (on both coasts), we get some new arrivals to the Targaryen family tree, and the crown continues its constant negotiation with the Faith regarding incestuous marriage.

Episode 090: The Conciliator

In episode 90, the Fingers finally reach into  the rule of Jaehaerys and Alysanne Targaryen, covering their early years, from arrival at KL with the help of Rogar Baratheon through their idyllic days on Dragonstone and everything in between. Listen in as Jaehaerys picks reconciliation over blood, Alyssa and Rogar get second chance at happiness, five Kingsguard earn their cloaks, and Alysanne picks a husband.

Episode 89 of Davos' Fingers takes us back to the Towering Targaryen Threesome...er...siblings.  We follow Aegon, Visenya, and Rhaenys from puzzling decision to rule Westeros through the Dragon’s wars and into the peace and prosperity of one unified kingdom of Westeros.

Episode 088: A Dream of Lysene Spring

We are fresh off our break and we have a doozy for you as Davos’ Fingers brings you the end of Fire and Blood!  In this episode Westeros hobbles along under an ineffective, disinterested,  and youthful King, a Lysene family that is hungry for power (or are they), a coup attempt engineered by some bitter also-rans, and the rule of a Merman until the King comes of age.  

While this may be the end of Fire and Blood the book, it is NOT the end of Fire and Blood the coverage by this podcast.  Because we dodged, ducked, dipped, dived, and...dodged our way through the first time, we have to go pick up the pieces.  So stay with us as we pick up in the next episode with the OPENING chapters of Fire and Blood!

Episode 087: A New Hand; A New Fist

In Episode 87 of the Davos’ Fingers Podcast, Matt and Scad discuss the rule of the new Hand Unwin Peake, the relative lack of involvement of poor Aegon III’s regents, the swift rise of Alyn Velaryon and his journeys, and the discovery of a long lost (er...short lost?) Targaryen relative.  The realm limps along, trying to find its footing still in the wake of the Dance of Dragons.

Episode 086: Of Wolves and Hoods

In Episode 086, Matt and Scad cover the early days of Aegon III’s rule under regency.  But Cregan Stark has marched a LOOOONG way, and he isn’t about to let this go smoothly, effectively seizing control of the city to investigate the murder of Aegon II and to make sure the war is ended for good and all.  Once the wolf is appeased, Tyland Lannister settles in as Hand, overpowers the regency, and starts to rebuild the kingdom, dealing with money issues, succession issues, and a new King that seemingly wants nothing to do with it.

Episode 085: The Dance - Dragons Die

In Episode 85, Matt and Scad watch the dragons dance and we watch the dragons die.  King's Landing rises up in a riot, driving Rhaenyra out, her support network in shambles as she searches for some way to regain control of Westeros.  Meanwhile the Greens have their own problems with a major military setback at Tumbleton.  The general disarray and discord that follows keeps the army from even reaching King’s Landing.  Aegon retakes King’s Landing only to bungle it away himself. Dragons figurative and literal die in large numbers in this episode, so hang on tight!

In Episode 84, we discuss the middle section of the Dance of Dragons wherein Rhaenyra goes on the offensive, Aemond lays waste to some empty fields and castles, and butchery and betrayal run rampant.  The various factions rise up against themselves, with leadership falling apart on the Green's side, and King’s Landing in near open rebellion against sitting Queen Rhaenyra.

Episode 080: The Dregs of Courage

In Episode 80 of the Davos’ Fingers podcast, we wrap up The Mystery Knight novella and the last of the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compilation as Dunk recovers from a bad outing at the tourney.  He is forced to give up his sword, armor and horse, only to find he is also missing his squire.  Dunk tries to uncover the mystery of the missing Egg only to find and unravel a deeper plot to place a Blackfyre on the Iron Throne of Westeros.

Bloodraven is the topic of Who’s That Dragon this week, as we take a deeper look at Brynden Rivers, including his time up at the wall, and what may be in store for him in the future of ASOIAF.  We follow this up with what might be the final Davos After Dark for while, so buckle in and enjoy!

The Fingers dive into the first half of The Mystery Knight in Episode 079.  Dunk and Egg meet the dashing Fiddler, the intensely focused Glendon Ball, and the enigmatic Maynard Plumm as they convene as uninvited guests at a Wedding Tourney.  Add a Dragon’s egg, Dragon dreams, a secret conspiracy plot, and Ser Duncan grabbing a lance once again and you have a recipe for a rollicking good time.

Episode 078: Seven Feet of Stubborn

The Davos’ Fingers podcast finishes off the Sworn Sword in Episode 78 this week as Dunk parlays with Rohanne Webber, who confounds him in many ways and reveals an ugly truth about the man he represents.  Upon confronting Ser Eustace about his questionable loyalties, Dunk and Egg are determined to leave his service on the morrow.  But Dunk, ever loyal, just can’t betray this man in his need, and goes to Coldmoat with him to deal with the Red Widow.  Another parlay and another failure means a trial by battle as Dunk fights for his lord’s stream, his pride, his smallfolk, and his future, not to mention Dunk’s own life.

“Who’s that Dragon” is replaced with “Who’s that Lion” this week as we focus on the Red Widow herself, Rohanne Webber.  Then of course we finish up strong with Davos After Dark.

We are still at Ashford in Episode 76 of the Davos’ Fingers Podcast.  The action moves from a very broad evil act to a very personal one as Aerion takes his own brand of crazy to the smallfolk.  Dunk intervenes and gets himself in a whole set of trouble culminating in one of the most enjoyable excerpts in the canon, and the demise of a very promising young leader.

Episode 075: A Falling Dragon, A Shooting Star

In Episode 75, Matt and Scad embark on a journey through A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a series of novelletes surrounding the wanderings and adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his bald squire known simply as “Egg”.  In this first episode, Dunk buries his only friend, and the knight he squired for, and begins his own journey of knighthood.  He makes his way to a tourney at Ashford Meadow, and is joined by Egg whom he takes as his new squire.  From there it’s all about getting in the jousting lists, buying armor that will fit him as he is a beast of a man, flirting with a puppeteer, learning about his potential jousting foes, and trying to stay out of way of nobles and princes.

Davos After Dark is still a thing, though you will hear us prattle on and on about what actually is a spoiler in this context.  In any event, we have done our best to avoid giving away any in-story spoilers in the main section of the cast, saving those for this special section at the end.  Also, pay attention for “Who’s That Dragon?”, a new little feature that lets us dive into a single Targaryen per episode.

Episode 074: The Blood Before the Pain

The Davos’ Fingers podcast has come to the conclusion of our Feast/Dance re-read in Episode 074:  The Blood Before the Pain.  Tears of joy and tears of sorrow.  But we soldier on!  In this episode Sam and Gilly reach Oldtown amidst Ironborn reaving.  Kevan deals with a docile Cersei, quarrels on the small council, and a quarrel in his chest.  There is unrest in Mereen as Barristan tries to calm the murder in the streets and maintain the peace outside the gates.  Lastly, Daenerys stumbles away from her Dragon and vaguely in the direction of Mereen, but finds an old enemy instead.

In Episode 72, The Fearless Fingers spend some time in and around Mereen as Hizdahr gets ahead (get it?), Quentyn sets up an alternate route to accomplishing his goals, and Victarion goes on the warpath, capturing ship after ship.  Meanwhile, Asha braves the cold, a poor suitor, and some grisly pre-dinner entertainment and is rewarded with a reunion.  Finally Arya earns her stripes and changes her spots.

Films Get Fingered – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Davos' Fingers Learn to Write: It Is Wolves I Mean To Hunt - The Motivations of the Red Wedding Conspirators

The Red Wedding ripped our hearts out, played tennis with them, ground them up into mush, then fed them to rabid animals. And that was just after the first time we read it. After the pain dulls to a low throb and we get our bearings back, we start to wonder how all the moving pieces of the Red Wedding conspiracy fit together; who planned what? Who talked to whom first? Why did so-and-so agree to it? From Tywin Lannister to Roose Bolton to Sybelle Spicer to Walder Effin' Frey himself, the web of conspiracy is twisted and complicated. It was these questions and more that Matt set out to answer a few months back in the first ever written Davos' Fingers essay, "It Is Wolves I Mean To Hunt: The Motivations of the Red Wedding Conspirators". Now, due to popular demand, we present this audio narration of Matt's essay. Oh, and did we mention that this recording includes the voice talents of all three Fingers? You won't want to miss Scad as Roose Bolton or Brooke as Fat Walda!

Episode 050: Smearing ASoS all over the place

It's time for a wrap up episode!  Episode 50 of Davos Fingers brings you our final thoughts on A Storm of Swords.

Episode 047: Do All Gods Feel So Lonely?

The Fingers arrive at….The Fingers!  Petyr returns home and Sansa finds a new one, while the Mountain finds a snake to kill and Jon welcomes some more men to the wall.  Also, while Brienne leaves town, Dany chooses to stay and rule.  It’s time to be a queen for realsies.

Spoilers will be avoided for those reading along for their first time.  That is until the final segment called Davos After Dark in which we spoil and love doing it.
